RECORD ANCHORS

morris · whoopsie · itself

The record for Animal Antics yields three coordinates specific to its premise—morris, whoopsie, and itself. That vocabulary places the living world at the center and gives creation its dominant tension. It establishes a documentary baseline, not a borrowed score; criticism must still ask what the form does with that material.

Animal Antics brings the living world into contact with creation through comedy. That intersection is our Fresh Take: judge the premise less by its familiarity than by how precisely that combination makes its conflict legible. The existing editorial note adds this view: A lively, generous comedy whose sharp timing and joy in performance deserve a big-screen audience.

Animal Antics (2021) arrives with the coordinates of a comédie film situated in 2020s cinema. The record credits Patrick Goddard with the direction and places its documented performers in the foreground. With an unusually compact form, the useful question is not to invent an invisible intention, but to notice how these documented choices shape audience expectations before the first frame.

Read as comedy, the film carries the pressure of creation. The living world is not merely scenery: it imposes its own time, limits, and a scale that displaces human action from the center. The most precise critical test is therefore the human cost of the creative act beyond its result. Comedy is often judged by the speed of its effects. This reading proposes the opposite: follow how power circulates between characters, how pauses work, and how a group agrees—or refuses—to laugh together.

The counterpoint views the characters from the landscape's perspective—as temporary presences rather than owners of the frame. Instead of asking whether the film confirms the expected story of the living world, the sharper question is whether it changes the person, place, or institution with the power to define it. The final question is not only ‘is it funny?’ but ‘whom does the laughter bring together, and at whose expense?’

THE VERDICT, REFRAMED

The takeaway: count fewer laughs and notice more precisely which relationships they reveal. Here, the living world changes meaning under the pressure of creation.

THE DOCUMENTARY STARTING POINT

""Animal Antics"" is an absurdist take on the effects of the Anthropocene, from the perspective of a woman and her talking dog Whoopsie on a trip to the zoo. The film is set a few years into the future, when 'The Wild' is no more, its last animal remnants confined to safari parks and zoos. As Sarah and Whoopsie do the rounds of the cages and pens, the dog leaves a trail of increasingly off-beam, off-colour comments, revealing itself as both absurdly precocious and deeply prejudiced. Whoopsie's remarks reflect less on man's best friend than humankind itself, our preoccupation with supremacy and dominance at the expense of the world in which we exist. A hybrid of Desmond Morris, Johnny Morris and Chris Morris, Goddard's film is a surreal, black-comic tour de force in which the anthropomorphic antics of man’s best friend offer up a deathly accurate mirror of mankind's very worst traits.
